Maui Day 1 -
Monday July 21st
We had about a two hour flight to Denver and then a 6 hour flight to Kahului Airport in Maui. I had never flown on such a long flight before, it was quite uncomfortable and strange being up in the air that long.
When we landed, it took us awhile to get our rental car (2008 Subaru Impreza), but once we did, we were off to the Westin in Lahaina, Maui to check in. We drove on Hwy 30 which is pretty much the only major street in Lahaina, Maui. It's one way traffic both ways for the most part, which makes you wonder what happens when they have a car wreck or construction, etc. I bet that traffic is no fun when that happens!
We noticed immediately that probably the best thing about Maui are the views when you drive. On one side of you there is nothing but ocean for as far as thee eye can see and on the other side, you see nothing but beautiful landscapes made from volcano. It almost looks like mountains. There are sugarcane fields, luscious plant life and gorgeous, tall palm trees as well as trees that kind of look like big bonsai trees everywhere! It was hard taking pictures outside of the car, but it was even MORE difficult NOT to take pictures since everything was just so beautiful...
We checked in to our hotel room at the Westin. We stayed in room 447. Overall, the room was small and didn't have a kitchenette, but the view it had more than made up for the downsides. We got a partial ocean view room, but only palm trees were in the way of seeing the ocean, so it was an extremely cool and gorgeous view. Plus, below us were some of the Westins' waterfalls, so when you opened our sliding glass door, you see nothing but palms and ocean and hear waterfall sounds. Very nice indeed.
That night we decided to try out some sushi from Hawaii. After researching a lot of reviews, we decided to try a place called Sansei. It was located in a place called Kapalua, which was a little bit of a drive.
We didn't order too much. Overall, we didn't like the sushi or the price. We spent a little over $60 including tip. Very high plus the sushi was not good. First impression was my edamame, which they served cold. I like cold edamame, but not the first time it's served to me. I usually eat cold edamame after it's been in my fridge, so that was not a good first impression. Then, we both chewed on what crunched like some crab shell in our california rolls. Not good. But, yeah, there's more but I won't get in to the rest since what I've listed so far is enough to make me not go back to a sushi place again. Too bad too since we were really hoping for some good sushi that night...
After dinner, we just walked along the beach got some drinks and went to bed....
